Bodegas Familiares Matarromera was created in 1988 by Carlos Moro, who is winegrower and winemaker. He decided to take up the legacy of his ancestors and take advantage of the wisdom of the wines that had taken root there in the 12th century, thanks to the monks of the Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena, which is located near Emina Winery.

His first facility was Bodega Matarromera, located in Valbuena de Duero, and he made his first wine in 1994, being awarded as the best wine in the world.

From that moment up to now, Bodegas Familiares Matarromera is made up of 9 wineries in 6 different appellations as you can observe in the map. Bodegas y Viñedos Carlos Moro, located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja) is the last facility that has been added to the company.

After the creation of Bodega Matarromera in 1988, Carlos Moro wanted to create a new type of wine in two of the most important wine growing areas of his birthplace, the Spanish region of Castilla y León. Now being the president of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera, Carlos began to sketch out his plan for the heart and soul of Emina at the end of the 1990s. In 2005, he built this modern Emina Ribera winery next to the historic Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena, on the banks of the Douro River. In 2007, Emina Rueda Winery was built close to Medina del Campo; both wineries are less than an hour away from Valladolid and less than two from Madrid. The creator of the Emina Wineries knew that innovative products and techniques could be developed, and, slowly but surely, he has managed to position this winegrowing region, framed by the prestigious Ribera del Duero and Rueda Denominations of Origin, at the forefront of technological innovation in the sector.
